3DTOBER OF THRONES 2020

I decided to take to the challenge to create and render a 3D scene-a-day during October - with a twist: instead of following the official Inktober prompt list, I followed a Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire themed prompt list (left).

As it turned, out, I fell a bit behind and finished a few days late (Oct is my birthday month, after all!) But I had a blast creating these and I really delved deeper into several areas of creation that I had wanted to explore further.

MY PROCESS: Because I was doing something that I hadn’t done before and something that I knew would take a good deal of time, I decided early on to be fast and loose with any rules. The point was to produce - as on time as possible. That meant that I used mostly pre-existing models - sometimes with customized textures. Only in a few instances - notably the two crowns - did I model anything significant.

My primary focus was to create the best looking scene that I could for the day’s prompt. I would often use ASearchOfIceAndFire.com to find inspiration from a quote. Once I had decided what the subject of my piece would be, I would typically go to Sketchfab.com and search the free models for whatever I needed that wasn’t already in my library. Again, I didn’t limit myself to an amount of hours. I let the process just play out and streamline itself as I repeated it over and over each day throughout the month.

All of the scenes were created in Cinema 4D and rendered with Arnold Renderer. Adobe After Effects was used for compositing as well as various post-production effects including fire and additional smoke/fog etc. In some cases, Photoshop was also used for additional painting or color treatments. Topaz Studio was used for final “look” tweaks to achieve more artistic and dynamic final results.
